Rain becomes runoff when it flows over our yards, sidewalks and roads. Runoff flows to storm drains, ditches, and other stormwater systems, eventually emptying directly into our streams, rivers, lakes and Puget Sound.
Role of Stormwater Systems
Stormwater systems are designed to collect and control runoff. They play a key role in preventing flooding, pollution and erosion. Stormwater systems include structures such as storm drains, ponds and ditches.
Property Owner Responsibilities
Pierce County requires property owners to inspect and maintain stormwater systems on their private property, including systems on commonly owned land. Pierce County inspects private stormwater systems to ensure they are functioning properly. If they are not, the responsible party is required to make improvements.
