About the Project
The stormwater system at Spanaway Lake Park will be upgraded over the next few years to disconnect stormwater runoff from the park to the lake. Currently, in Spanaway Park and the neighborhoods surrounding it, runoff from streets, parking lots and other hard surfaces is carried by rainwater through pipes that drain to Spanaway Lake without treatment. This includes pet waste, leaks from cars and other pollutants that are carried by runoff to the lake.
This project will include installation of bioretention areas (large, engineered rain gardens), permeable pavement and pavers and stormwater filters. This project is being funded primarily by stormwater retrofit grants from the Washington Department of Ecology. These grants are awarded to communities to comply to with Federal Clean Water Act, which requires communities to prevent pollution from entering these waterbodies. The project will be completed in phases, as funding is available.
Phase IA (Completed Fall 2013): 11 bioretention areas, drywell modifications and permeable paver installation adjacent to boat house. Cost $311,842. Contractor: Harlow Construction. Funded by Pierce County and a grant from Washington State Department of Ecology.
Phase IB (Completed Fall 2014): Installation of pervious concrete, including a portion installed in Bresemann Boulevard. Cost $169,527. Contractor: WHH Nisqually Federal Services, LLC. Funded by Pierce County and a grant from Washington State Department of Ecology.
Phase II (Completed Fall 2014): Five stormwater filtration units, permeable pavers and pervious concrete. Cost $770,849. Contractor: WHH Nisqually Federal Services, LLC. Funded by Pierce County and a grant from Washington State Department of Ecology.
Phase III: Two bio-retention areas and one stormwater filtration unit installed. Pierce County is working with Ecology to complete a grant agreement for Phase III. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2018.
